I. Core Properties: The Chemical Basis for Driving Functions
Accurate pH regulation ability: As a tribasic organic acid, the aqueous solution of citric acid is weakly acidic (the pH value of 1% concentration is about 2.2-2.5). Moreover, by compounding with citrate (such as sodium citrate), a stable buffer system can be constructed to accurately control the pH value of the product within the range of 4.5-6.5. This range is highly consistent with the physiological pH of human skin (around pH 5.5) and scalp, which can avoid irritation to the epidermal barrier caused by excessive acidity or alkalinity and reduce the risk of sensitivity.
Efficient metal ion chelating property: The hydroxyl group and three carboxyl groups in the molecular structure form a "polydentate ligand", which can strongly combine with metal ions such as calcium, magnesium and iron in water to form stable water-soluble chelates. This property can not only eliminate the interference of metal ions on product stability, but also enhance the decontamination efficiency of cleaning products.
Mild reducibility and synergistic effect: Although its reducibility is weak, it can synergize with antioxidant components such as vitamin E and tea polyphenols. By chelating metal ions that catalyze oxidation, it can delay the rancidity and deterioration of oil components (such as plant essential oils and fatty acids), and indirectly extend the shelf life of products.
