Highly soluble in water; the pH value of a 1% aqueous solution is 9.7, showing alkalinity. It gradually hydrolyzes into phosphite in water.
2.Chemical Properties
Sodium tripolyphosphate exhibits excellent chelating ability towards metal ions such as calcium, magnesium, and iron, forming soluble complexes. This property enables it to soften hard water effectively. As an inorganic surfactant, it also demonstrates certain characteristics of organic surfactants.

Application
1. Detergent Industry
Sodium tripolyphosphate is a key additive in synthetic detergents. During the washing process, it forms soluble chelates with metal ions, effectively preventing precipitation and significantly enhancing cleaning efficiency. Additionally, it can act as a soap synergist, preventing the separation of fats from soap bars and the formation of soap bloom. With strong emulsifying properties for lubricating oils and fats, it is used to regulate the pH value of soap solutions.
2. Industrial Applications
Water Treatment: Functions as a water softener in industrial water treatment, reducing water hardness.
Tanning Industry: Serves as a pre-tanning agent, laying a solid foundation for subsequent tanning processes.
Dyeing: Acts as an auxiliary agent to ensure uniform dyeing.
Industrial Suspension Preparation: Used as a dispersant in the preparation of suspensions for industries such as paint, kaolin, magnesium oxide, and calcium carbonate, stabilizing the suspension system.
Drilling Operations: Serves as a mud dispersant to maintain stable mud performance.
Paper Industry: Functions as an anti-grease agent, protecting paper from oil contamination.

In the food industry, sodium tripolyphosphate is an important food additive.
Meat Products: As a water retention agent in meat processing, it significantly improves the tenderness and binding properties of finished products, increasing the yield. For example, in the processing of duck, chicken, and fish, it enhances the water retention rate, optimizing the quality, flavor, and texture of meat products.
Fruits and Vegetables: Used as a softening agent, it reduces the hardness of fruit peels by binding with calcium, maintaining softness and preventing discoloration. The usage amount must strictly comply with the regulations of China's Hygienic Standard for the Use of Food Additives (GB2760 - 2014). For instance, the maximum allowable usage is 0.5g/kg in milk and dairy products, 1.0g/kg in aquatic products, and 3.0g/kg in prefabricated meat products.
