Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC), also known as hypromellose, is a semisynthetic, water-soluble polymer derived from cellulose. It is produced by the chemical modification of natural cellulose through etherification with methyl chloride and propylene oxide, introducing methoxy (-OCH₃) and hydroxypropyl (-OCH₂CHOHCH₃) groups into the cellulose molecular structure.

● Structure: A hydrophilic polymer with amphiphilic properties due to the substitution of hydroxyl groups with methyl and hydroxypropyl moieties.
● Solubility: Soluble in cold water but insoluble in hot water, organic solvents, and oils.
