Products Description
Alpha Olefin Sulfonate (AOS) is an anionic surfactant family derived from linear alpha olefins, typically obtained from petroleum or renewable sources like vegetable oils. The manufacturing process involves sulfonation of alpha olefins using sulfur trioxide (SO₃), followed by neutralization with bases (e.g., sodium hydroxide) to form salts, predominantly sodium alpha olefin sulfonate. Structurally, AOS consists of a hydrophobic hydrocarbon chain (ranging from C₁₂–C₂₀) and a hydrophilic sulfonate group (-SO₃⁻), enabling it to reduce surface tension and act as a detergent, emulsifier, and foaming agent.

Key Properties
● Surfactant Efficiency: Strong detergency, capable of removing oil, dirt, and grease from various surfaces by reducing water surface tension.
● Foaming Ability: Produces stable, dense foam even in hard water, making it ideal for products requiring persistent lather (e.g., shampoos, dishwashing liquids).
● Biodegradability: Readily biodegrades in natural environments, positioning it as an eco-friendly alternative to some synthetic surfactants.
● PH Stability: Maintains performance across a wide pH range (4–10), though extreme conditions may degrade its structure.
● Compatibility: Mixes well with other surfactants, polymers, and additives, allowing flexible formulation in diverse products.
Advantage
● Low Skin Irritation: Generally milder than some traditional anionic surfactants (e.g., Sodium Lauryl Sulfate), making it suitable for sensitive-skin formulations.
● Cost-Effectiveness: Competitive pricing and efficient performance reduce formulation costs, especially for large-scale industrial applications.
● Versatility: Adaptable to various product forms (liquids, powders, gels) and industries, from consumer goods to agriculture.
● Renewable Source Option: Some AOS variants are derived from plant-based olefins, aligning with sustainability goals.
Application
● Personal Care Products:
○ Shampoos, body washes, and bubble baths for cleansing and foaming.
○ Facial cleansers and hand soaps due to its mildness and low irritation potential.
● Household Cleaning:
○ Dishwashing liquids to cut through grease and maintain foam stability.
○ Laundry detergents and all-purpose cleaners for effective stain removal.
● Industrial Uses:
○ Oilfield chemicals as a foaming agent in drilling fluids or enhanced oil recovery.
○ Textile processing to improve dye penetration and remove impurities from fabrics.
● Agriculture:
○ Pesticide and fertilizer formulations to enhance spray adhesion and dispersion on plant surfaces.
● Food Industry:
○ Indirect use in food packaging as an anti-fogging agent or emulsifier in food-contact adhesives.
