Sodium dodecyl sulfate is an anionic surfactant and a typical representative of sulfate ester surfactants. It is also known AS SDS, SLS, As, K12, sodium coconut oil alcohol sulfate, sodium lauryl alcohol sulfate, and a foaming agent. The products sold on the market are usually white to slightly yellow crystalline powders, non-toxic, slightly soluble in alcohol, insoluble in chloroform and ether, and readily soluble in water. It has good compatibility with anionic and nonionic compounds, and possesses excellent emulsifying, foaming, foaming, penetrating, decontaminating and dispersing properties.
It generates abundant foam and is biodegradable quickly, but its water solubility is lower than that of sodium fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether sulfate (referred to as AES). It is not sensitive to alkali and hard water, but its stability under acidic conditions is second only to common sulfonates and close to AES. Long-term heating should not exceed 95℃. Its irritability is at a medium level among surfactants. The irritation index of a 10% solution is 3.3, which is higher than AES but lower than sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (referred to as LAS). It is widely used as a foaming agent in toothpaste, soap, bath lotion, shampoo, laundry powder and cosmetics. Sodium dodecyl sulfate is contained in 95% of personal skin care products and household cleaning products.
