Products Description
Cellulose acetate tow is a specialized material composed of cellulose acetate fibers bundled into a continuous, ribbon-like form. Derived from natural cellulose (typically sourced from wood pulp or cotton linters), it undergoes acetylation to create a semi-synthetic polymer.
Cellulose acetate tow is produced by dissolving cellulose acetate in solvents, then extruding it into fine filaments. These filaments are crimped, bonded, and formed into a cohesive tow band optimized for high-speed filter rod production. The 2.5Y 30000 variant offers a standardized density and porosity, ensuring consistent performance in filtration applications. Its white, soft, and uniform appearance makes it ideal for integration into automated manufacturing processes.
It is widely used in cigarette filter rods.

Key Characteristics
Biodegradability: Unlike synthetic plastics, cellulose acetate is partially biodegradable under specific conditions, reducing long-term environmental impact.
High Filtration Efficiency: The porous structure of the tow effectively traps particulate matter, tar, and other harmful substances in smoke.
Thermal Stability: Retains structural integrity at high temperatures, preventing deformation during filter rod production.
Low Toxicity: Non-reactive and free from harmful additives, ensuring compliance with health regulations.
Customizability: Properties like denier, crimp level, and bundle density can be adjusted to meet diverse filtration requirements.
Advantage
● Environmental Friendliness: Sourced from renewable cellulose and breaks down faster than plastic alternatives.
● Superior Smoking Experience: Reduces harshness while maintaining adequate airflow, enhancing user comfort.
● Manufacturing Efficiency: Compatible with high-speed rod-making machines, minimizing production downtime.
● Regulatory Compliance: Meets global safety standards for tobacco products, including FDA and ISO guidelines.
Technical Specifications (Typical)
| Property | Description |
|---|---|
| Fiber Diameter | 1–3 denier (fine), enabling dense packing for filtration. |
| Tensile Strength | 2–4 cN/dtex, balancing durability with flexibility. |
| Moisture Regain | ~6–8% at 65% RH, lower than natural cellulose. |
| Melting Range | Softens at ~180°C, decomposes above 230°C (thermoplastic nature). |
Application
The most prominent use of cellulose acetate tow is in cigarette filter tips, where it serves as the core filtration medium.
